They go to church and wear Jesus’ teachings on their sleeves. You’ve seen them yucking it up good ol’ boy style in the news. These people sit in our state legislature. It’s painfully true, no? It basically means that there are lots of asshats out there who want you to believe they are virtuous but they are really asshats at heart. The state motto, Esse Quam Videri, means “to be, rather than to seem.” The phrase originates from Cicero’s writing entitled “On Friendship.” It translates to “Not nearly so many people want actually to be possessed of virtue as want to appear to be possessed of it.” Mull that over for a moment. ![]() Our family’s roots and story begin here in the crumbly red earth of North Carolina. We’re in the midst of our third historic renovation in one of Raleigh’s flagship downtown neighborhoods. North Carolina is home to world class universities, Research Triangle Park, glorious mountains and beaches, a rich arts culture, food to make your palette dance, and feverishly warm folks to greet you in earnest, not just to be polite. We saw vestiges of progress and the badge of politics unlike North Carolina’s Southern brethren. We liked its easy living and quality of life. We picked Raleigh because it was manageable in size, a welcome change after Chicago. I grew up in Virginia and had frozen in the Midwest for far too many years. The world was an open field, and we were free agents. Mac Daddy and I chose Raleigh to be our home about 12 years ago. Bird and Deal will always say, “I was born in North Carolina.” They shall say it with pride, dammit. ![]() I tell them that no matter where the winds blow them, they will always have a tie to North Carolina. ![]() North Carolina is the state where my sons were born. Esse Quam Videri is the motto of this state I call home.
